○船は針路を真西に取り、日々進んで二つの小島を見るに及んで舵を切って北に向かった。この島は江戸に近いという。ある日、巨大な鯨が背中を船の横に露出した。海藻が付着して岩礁のようであった。船員たちは驚き慌てて「暗礁がある」と叫んだ。「キャプテン」と「カーター」は共に叱って言った「この場所に暗礁があるはずがない。詳しく見よ」と。しばらくして鯨がやはり潮を噴いた。皆の疑いはたちまち解けた。また既に「カムチャツカ」に
