All the court ministers, including Minister Kane no Muraji and others, made an oath before Prince Ōtomo, promising that there should be no deviation or betrayal whatsoever. Thus in the twelfth month, Emperor Tenji passed away. He had reigned for ten years and was forty-six years old, though some say fifty-eight. According to another account, Emperor Tenji once made an imperial visit to Yamashina and did not return - perhaps he ascended to heaven, as only his shoes remained, so a mausoleum was built at that place. When the year of Jinshin dawned, through Prince Ōtomo's scheme, messengers were sent to Yoshino to summon Tenmu back.
