現代語訳
（帝王が髪を剃ることは）聖武より始まる。太上天皇の遺言によって、道祖王を太子とされた。これは天武天皇の孫で、新田親王の子である。
天平宝字元年、橘諸兄が薨去した。年七十四。井手大臣と号した。三月、太子道祖王を廃して、その家に帰らせた。右大臣藤原豊成は「帝の遺言であるのにいかがなものか」と申し上げたけれども、天皇の心に適わないためこのようになった。四月、親王の中で、いずれを太子とすべきかと沙汰があった時、豊成らが申す意見があったけれども許容されず、藤原仲麻呂が申し上げることによって、大炊王を太子とされた。これも天武天皇の孫で、舎人親王の子である。

(For an emperor to shave his head) began with Shomu. By the will of the Retired Emperor, Prince Doso was made Crown Prince. He was a grandson of Emperor Tenmu and son of Prince Nitta.
In the first year of Tempyo-hoji era, Tachibana no Moroe died at the age of seventy-four. He was called the Minister of Ide. In the third month, Crown Prince Doso was deposed and sent back to his residence. Right Minister Fujiwara no Toyonari protested, saying "How can this be done when it was the emperor's dying wish?" However, because it did not accord with the current emperor's intentions, it was done thus. In the fourth month, when there was deliberation about which prince should be made Crown Prince, although Toyonari and others expressed their opinions, they were not accepted. Based on what Fujiwara no Nakamarō proposed, Prince Ōi was made Crown Prince. He too was a grandson of Emperor Tenmu and son of Prince Toneri.
