桓武天皇 光仁天皇の第一皇子である。山部親王と号した。母は高野夫人といい、高野乙継の娘である。天皇は初め称徳天皇に仕えて従五位下、大学頭に任じられた。光仁天皇即位後、四位の侍従となり、中務卿に任じられた。
宝亀四年に皇太子となった。
天応元年に即位し、御弟早良親王を皇太子とした。

In the twelfth month, Emperor Kōnin passed away at the age of seventy-three. The era names were Hōki for eleven years and Ten'ō for one year. His reign lasted a total of twelve years.
Fiftieth Emperor
Emperor Kanmu was the first son of Emperor Kōnin. He was called Prince Yamabe. His mother was called Lady Takano, the daughter of Takano no Otsutsugu. The Emperor initially served Emperor Shōtoku with the rank of Junior Fifth Rank Lower Grade and was appointed Head of the Imperial University. After Emperor Kōnin's enthronement, he became a Fourth Rank Chamberlain and was appointed Minister of Central Affairs.
In the fourth year of Hōki, he became Crown Prince.
He ascended the throne in the first year of Ten'ō and made his younger brother Prince Sawara the Crown Prince.
