陸奥国の夷賊で高丸という者が達谷窟から蜂起し、駿河国清見関まで攻め上った。征夷大将軍坂上田村麻呂は節刀を賜り出陣した。高丸は退いて奥州へ引き籠もり、田村は続いて奥州へ攻め入って合戦し、神楽岡という所で高丸を射殺した。また悪路王という賊も平定した。奥州は悉く平定された。田村は胆沢郡に八幡宮を建て、その弓矢等を納め、また達谷窟の前に山城の鞍馬寺を模して多聞天の像を安置した。十一月、田村が帰京すると天皇は仰せになった。「近年数度奥州が乱れたが、田村は今度悉く退治した。その功績は大である」として従三位を授けられた。

The Emishi rebel called Takamaru from Mutsu Province rose up from Tagaya Cave and attacked as far as Kiyomi Barrier in Suruga Province. The Seii Taishogun (Great General for Subduing the Barbarians) Sakanoue no Tamuramaro received the ceremonial sword and departed for battle. Takamaru retreated and withdrew to Ōshū, and Tamura continued to attack into Ōshū, engaging in battle and shooting Takamaru to death at a place called Kaguraoka. He also pacified the rebel called Akuro-ō (King Akuro). All of Ōshū was completely subdued. Tamura built a Hachiman Shrine in Isawa District and deposited his bow and arrows there, and also in front of Tagaya Cave, he modeled after Kurama Temple of Yamashiro and enshrined a statue of Tamonten (Vaiśravaṇa). In the eleventh month, when Tamura returned to the capital, the Emperor declared: "In recent years Ōshū has been in rebellion several times, but Tamura has now completely subdued it all. His merit is great," and awarded him the court rank of Ju-sanmi (Junior Third Rank).
