 テ入唐ス。空海ハ弘(コウ)法大師ノコトナリ。葛野ヲ。或ハ賀能(カノ)ト  モ云フ。去年 発船(ハツセン)ストイヘドモ。葛野ガ船。難波(ナニハノ)津ニテ。  風ニ逢(アフ)テ損(ソン)ズルユヘニ。一年 延引(ヱンイン)  二十四年春。天皇不-例(レイ)ニヨリテ諸 医薬(イヤク)ヲ献(ケン)スレドモ  《振り仮名:験|シルシ|ゲン 》ナシ。諸社ヘモ祈念(キネン)セラル。又 早良(サウラ)太子ノ為ニ寺ヲ淡(アハ)  路(ヂ)ニ建(タテ)。諸国ニ庫(クラ)ヲ立。年貢ヲ納(ヲサメ)テ。其国 忌(キ)及 ̄ヒ奉幣(ホウヘイ)ノ  料(レウ)トス。彼(カノ)怨霊(ヲンリヤウ)ヲナグサメラル 六月。遣唐使 等(ラ)皈朝(キテウ)  七月。葛野 参内(サンダイ)。従四位ヨリ従三位ニ叙(ジヨ)セラル。菅(カン)清公モ  六位ヨリ五位ニ進(スヽ)ム。副使道 益(マス)ハ。明(ミヤウ)州ニテ卒(シユツ)ス。贈(ソウ)位ア  リ。伝教モ皈朝ス天 台(タイ)ノ法ヲ相伝(サウテン)シ。名ヲ異(イ)朝ニ残(ノコ)セリ。  弘(コウ)法ハ逗留(トウリウ)シテイマダ皈ラズ 八月。伝教ヲ内裏(ダイリ)ヘ  召(メス)。仏 像(サウ)及 ̄ヒ経論(キヤウロン)ヲ奉ル 九月。伝教ニ勅(チヨク)シテ。高 雄(ヲ)ニテ。

現代語訳

て入唐した。空海は弘法大師のことである。葛野を、或いは賀能とも言う。去年出発するはずであったが、葛野の船が難波津で風に遭って損傷したため、一年延期となった。 二十四年春、天皇が病気になったため諸医が薬を献上したが効験がなかった。諸社へも祈念された。また早良太子のために寺を淡路に建て、諸国に倉庫を立て、年貢を納めてその国の忌日及び奉幣の料とした。彼の怨霊を慰められた。六月、遣唐使等が帰朝した。 七月、葛野が参内し、従四位より従三位に叙せられた。菅原清公も六位より五位に進んだ。副使道益は明州で死去した。贈位があった。伝教も帰朝し、天台の法を相伝し、名を異朝(中国)に残した。弘法は逗留してまだ帰らない。八月、伝教を内裏へ召し、仏像及び経論を奉った。九月、伝教に勅して高雄にて。

and entered Tang China. Kūkai refers to Kōbō Daishi (Great Master Kōbō). Kadono is also sometimes called Kanō. Although they were supposed to depart last year, Kadono's ship was damaged by wind at Naniwa harbor, so departure was delayed by one year. In the spring of the twenty-fourth year, the Emperor fell ill, and although various physicians offered medicines, there was no efficacy. Prayers were also offered at various shrines. Additionally, a temple was built in Awaji for Prince Sawara, granaries were established in various provinces, and annual tribute was stored to serve as provisions for the anniversary of his death and ritual offerings. [The court] sought to appease his vengeful spirit. In the sixth month, the Tang envoys and others returned to court. In the seventh month, Kadono appeared at court and was promoted from Junior Fourth Rank to Junior Third Rank. Sugawara no Kiyokimi was also promoted from Sixth Rank to Fifth Rank. Vice-envoy Michimasu died in Mingzhou. He received a posthumous rank promotion. Dengyō also returned to court, having received transmission of the Tendai teachings and leaving his name renowned in the foreign land [of China]. Kōbō remained there and had not yet returned. In the eighth month, Dengyō was summoned to the Imperial Palace and presented Buddhist statues and scriptures. In the ninth month, Dengyō was ordered by imperial edict to [conduct ceremonies] at Takao.
