四年三月、在原業平が従五位上に叙せられた。平城天皇の孫、阿保親王の子である。
五年正月、大納言右大将源定が卒した。嵯峨上皇の愛子であった。同月に、その兄大納言源弘が卒した。この人は学問を好み、筆法に通じ、管絃を好んだ。
五月、神泉苑にて、崇道天皇・伊予親王・藤原夫人吉子・橘逸勢・文室宮田麻呂らの怨霊を祭った。これを御霊会という。近年続けて疫病が流行り、この年の春よりことに甚だしく、人が多く死んだことにより、これら怨霊の仕業であろうかと申す者があったため、この祭を行った。
十月、良房を召して宴を賜り、六十の賀を行った。この年、良房が奉じて、春澄善縄をして続日本後紀を作らしめた。

In the third month of the fourth year, Ariwara no Narihira was granted the rank of Junior Fifth Rank Upper Grade. He was the grandson of Emperor Heizei and the son of Prince Abo.
In the first month of the fifth year, Minamoto no Sadamu, Major Counselor and Right General, passed away. He was a beloved son of Retired Emperor Saga. In the same month, his elder brother Minamoto no Hiromi, Major Counselor, also passed away. Hiromi was fond of learning, accomplished in calligraphy, and enjoyed music.
In the fifth month, at the Shinsen'en Garden, the vengeful spirits of Emperor Sudō, Prince Iyo, Lady Fujiwara Yoshiko, Tachibana no Hayanari, and Funya no Miyatamaro were placated in a ceremony. This was called the Goryōe. As epidemic disease had continued to spread in recent years, and especially severe since the spring of this year with many people dying, some suggested it was the work of these malevolent spirits, and thus this ceremony was performed.
In the tenth month, Yoshifusa was summoned and given a banquet in celebration of his sixtieth birthday. In this year, Yoshifusa accepted the commission and had Haruzumi no Yoshinawa compile the Shoku Nihon Kōki.
