じて、政務にかまわず、ゆえにまだこの事を知らないとのことだ」と言った。基経は「これは天下の大事である。太政大臣の指示なくしては、承引しがたい」として、すぐに使者をもって良房に告げた。良房は大いに驚いて言うには「先帝の御代に、今上陛下がまだ皇太子であられた時、この人（左大臣源信）の力によって御位が定まった。そうであれば左大臣は功臣である。何の罪があろうか。左大臣が罪に処せられるなら、良房がまず誅せられるべきであろう」と奏上された。これによって左大臣は無事であった。やがて八月三日、大宅鷹取という者がいて、「応天門は善男父子が夜中にひそかに行って火をつけて焼き、かえって左大臣の仕業であると奏上した」という旨を訴え出たため、参議南淵年名・藤原良縄が命を奉じて糾明したところ、紛れもなく善男の仕業であることが明らかになった。死罪に処せられるべきであったが、一等を減じて伊豆の国へ（流罪となった）。

Therefore, the Left Minister is a meritorious retainer. What crime could he have committed? If the Left Minister is to be punished, then Yoshifusa should be executed first." He presented this to the throne. As a result of this, the Left Minister was unharmed. In due course, on the third day of the eighth month, a man called Ōya no Takatori came forward with an accusation, stating that Yoshio and his son had secretly gone to the Ōtenmon Gate in the middle of the night, set fire to it, and then reported it as the work of the Left Minister. Sangi Minabuchi no Toshina and Fujiwara no Yoshitsuna were ordered to conduct a thorough investigation, and it became undeniably clear that it was indeed the work of Yoshio. Although he deserved the death penalty, his sentence was reduced by one degree, and he was exiled to Izu Province.
