現代語訳
向けて、頭陀の行をなさった。五月、左中将在原業平が卒去した。年五十六。和歌の達人で好色の人であった。十一月八日、右大臣基経が摂政を辞して関白となった。これが関白の始まりである。この月の末より太上天皇が病気になられた。十二月四日、基経が太政大臣に任じられた。良房・基経父子が相続して、摂関・相国となったことから、朝廷の権力はすべて藤原氏に帰した。太上天皇が崩御された。年三十一。さまざまな追善供養が行われた。
六年正月二日、天皇が元服された。基経が加冠役を務めた。大納言源多が理髪役を務めた。その儀式は厳重であった。源多が右大臣となった。藤原良世、藤原冬緒が大納言となった。在原行平、源能有が中納言となった。二月、基経に准三宮の待遇と随身兵杖が賜られた。

and devoted himself to ascetic practices (dhūta). In the fifth month, Sadaichū Ariwara no Narihira died at the age of fifty-six. He was a master of Japanese poetry and a person of amorous disposition. On the eighth day of the eleventh month, Udaijin Mototsune ceased being regent (sesshō) and became chancellor (kanpaku). This was the beginning of the kanpaku system. From the end of this month, the Retired Emperor fell ill. On the fourth day of the twelfth month, Mototsune was appointed Grand Minister of State (dajō-daijin). With the father and son Yoshifusa and Mototsune succeeding each other as regent-chancellor and prime minister, all power in the court came to belong to the Fujiwara clan. The Retired Emperor passed away at the age of thirty-one. Various memorial services were performed.
On the second day of the first month of the sixth year, the Emperor came of age. Mototsune performed the cap-adding ceremony. Dainagon Minamoto no Tōru performed the hair-cutting ceremony. The ritual was conducted with great solemnity. Minamoto no Tōru became Udaijin. Fujiwara no Yoshiyo and Fujiwara no Fuyuo became Dainagon. Ariwara no Yukihira and Minamoto no Yoshiari became Chūnagon. In the second month, Mototsune was granted the treatment of Jun-Sankyū and awarded zuijin guards with weapons.
