藤原菅根などと相談して、あるときは菅丞相を調伏し、あるときは度々讒言を加えたということである。天皇の弟で斎世親王という方がいる。菅丞相の婿である。それ故に、先に宇多天皇の譲位を押しとどめられたのは、斎世を太子に立てようとする企みであると、時平が奏聞されたということである。天皇は今年十七歳であるから、その真偽の沙汰もなかったのであろうか。時平は代々の執政で、威勢が強く専ら政務を執り行っていたと聞こえる。源光を菅丞相に代えて右大臣とした。

They consulted with Fujiwara no Sugane and others, sometimes performing exorcisms against Minister Kan, and at other times repeatedly making slanderous accusations against him. There was a prince called Tokiyo, the Emperor's younger brother, who was Minister Kan's son-in-law. Therefore, Tokihira memorialized that the reason Minister Kan had previously restrained Emperor Uda's abdication was a scheme to install Tokiyo as crown prince. Since the Emperor was seventeen years old this year, perhaps there was no deliberation on the truth or falsehood of this matter. Tokihira was from a line of hereditary regents, wielding strong authority and monopolizing government administration. Minamoto no Hikaru was made Right Minister in place of Minister Kan.
When the Cloistered Emperor heard of this and tried to pardon Minister Kan's crime of exile, he visited the palace on the last day of the same month.
