十二月、智証に大師号が贈られた。
六年六月、小野道風を召して、漢朝の賢王・名臣の徳行を、清涼殿の南庇の壁に書かせた。道風は名の知れた能書家である。
七年八月、洪水があり、田畑が流され、多くの人が死んだ。九月、小野道風をして、賢聖障子の絵の題名を書かせた。
八年六月二十六日、愛宕の方より黒雲が起こり、にわかに大きな雷となって、清涼殿の上へ落ち、大納言藤原清貫・右中弁平希世らをはじめ、侍臣数名が雷火によって焼け死んだ。天皇は火を避けて常寧殿へ移られた。菅原丞相の怨霊のなすところと、世に語り伝えられている。〔著者注：疑わしいことではあるが。〕九月二十二日、天皇は病により、位を御子の寛明に譲られた。同二十九日に崩御された。御年四〔十〕

In the twelfth month, the title of Daishi (Great Master) was posthumously conferred upon Chishō.
In the sixth year, sixth month, Ono no Tōfū was summoned and ordered to inscribe on the walls of the southern eaves of the Seiryōden the virtuous deeds of wise rulers and distinguished ministers of the Chinese dynasties. Tōfū was a calligrapher of renowned skill.
In the seventh year, eighth month, there was a great flood; fields and paddies were swept away, and many people perished. In the ninth month, Ono no Tōfū was ordered to write the titles of the paintings on the Kensei-shōji (the sliding screens depicting sages and wise men).
In the eighth year, sixth month, on the twenty-sixth day, black clouds arose from the direction of Atago, and suddenly a great thunderclap struck down upon the Seiryōden. Major Counselor Fujiwara no Kiyotsura, the Middle Controller of the Right, Taira no Mareyo, and several other attendants were burned to death by the lightning fire. The Emperor withdrew to the Jōneiden to escape the flames. It has been transmitted through the ages that this was the work of the vengeful spirit of Minister-Chancellor Sugawara. [Author's note: This is doubtful.] On the twenty-second day of the ninth month, the Emperor, due to illness, abdicated in favor of his son Hiroyoshi (Yutaakira). On the twenty-ninth day of the same month, he passed away. He was in his forties [the text is cut off].
