（藤原忠文を征夷大将軍）とし、その弟藤原忠舒、ならびに源経基らを副将軍として、関東へ派遣された。小野好古・藤原慶幸・大蔵春実らを将軍として、兵船二百余艘を率いて伊予国へ出発した。また、東海・東山両道へ官符を下賜し、軍功があれば賞を行うべき旨を触れ回らせた。二月朔日、下野の押領使・藤原秀郷と、常陸の掾・平貞盛が、陸奥・下野の兵を集め、一万九千人を率いて、下野国において将門と合戦した。将門の兵数百人が討たれて引き退いた。貞盛・秀郷が追いかけて、十三日に下総国に到った。将門は島広山に籠もった。貞盛は火を放ち、将門ならびにその従類の家を焼いた。十四日、将門自ら出て、辛島という所にて戦った。貞盛の放った矢が将門に当たり、馬から落ちた。秀郷が駆け寄り、将門の首を切った。同時にその従類百九十七人を殺した。その蓄え（以下次ページへ続く）

(Fujiwara no Tadafumi was appointed Seii Taishōgun,) and his younger brother Fujiwara no Tadanobu, together with Minamoto no Tsunemoto and others, were appointed as vice-generals and dispatched to the Kantō region. Ono no Yoshifuru, Fujiwara no Yoshiyuki, and Ōkura no Hanemori were appointed as generals, leading a fleet of over two hundred warships and setting out toward Iyo Province. Furthermore, official documents (kanpu) were issued to both the Tōkai and Tōsan circuits, announcing that those who rendered military merit would be rewarded accordingly.
On the first day of the second month, Fujiwara no Hidesato, the Ōryōshi (military commissioner) of Shimotsuke Province, and Taira no Sadamori, the assistant official (jō) of Hitachi Province, mustered the forces of Mutsu and Shimotsuke, leading nineteen thousand men, and engaged Masakado in battle in Shimotsuke Province. Several hundred of Masakado's troops were struck down and retreated. Sadamori and Hidesato pursued them, and on the thirteenth day arrived in Shimōsa Province. Masakado took refuge in the mountains of Shimahiro. Sadamori set fire to the dwellings of Masakado and his followers. On the fourteenth day, Masakado himself came out and fought at a place called Karashima. An arrow shot by Sadamori struck Masakado and he fell from his horse.
