The stockpiled weapons and equipment were seized and collected. Masakado's brothers and several other associates, as well as his allies Fujiwara no Harushige and Okiyo-ō and others, were all killed in various locations. Sadamori was the son of Kunika, and since Masakado was his father's enemy, he was especially zealous in his military exploits. Hidesato had at first intended to submit to Masakado and proceeded to his manor. Masakado was delighted and came out to greet him. However, Hidesato perceived that Masakado's character and capacity were frivolous and that he would not be able to achieve his true ambitions, and so he ultimately joined forces with Sadamori and achieved great merit. With the Kantō region now pacified, on the ninth day of the third month, Hidesato was granted the rank of Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Grade (Jushii-ge), and was appointed governor of both Shimotsuke and Musashi Provinces. Hidesato is none other than the man known to the world as Tawara Tōta. After this, both Hidesato and Sadamori served as Generals of the Pacification Headquarters (Chinjufu Shōgun). Sadamori was granted the rank of Senior Fifth Rank, Upper Grade (Jushii-jō), and appointed as Assistant Director of the Right Stables (Uma no suke). On the twenty-fifth day of the same month, Masakado's severed head arrived in the capital. In the fourth month, Tadafumi and his forces returned to the capital from Kiyomi Barrier in Suruga Province. Meanwhile, Sumitomo had been plundering Iyo, Sanuki, Awaji, and Awa Provinces, and engaged in battle with Kuni-kaze, the Assistant Governor of Awa Province. Sumitomo... (continued on the next page)
