利を失って引き退き、そこからまた土佐国・安芸国・周防国等を濫妨し、直ちに大宰府へ赴いて官物を奪い取った。討手の大将・小野好古らが、純友を追って大宰府へ赴いた。
（承平）四年五月、小野好古らは筑前の博多津にて純友と合戦し、藤原慶幸・大蔵春実が身命を捨てて戦い、火を放って賊船を焼いた。六月、純友は戦に敗れ、従っていた者たちのある者は降参し、逃げ失せたので、純友は小舟に乗って伊予国へ逃げ帰った。当国の警固に居た橘遠保という者が、純友ならびにその子・重太丸を討ち殺して、首を都へ送った。あるいは純友は生け捕られて、獄中にて死んだとも言われる。八月、小野好古が帰洛した。十一月、忠平は摂政を辞した。勅して関白とし、万機の政は、まず忠平にお預けして（諮って）から、奏聞すべきこと、と。昭宣公の例のごとし。

Having lost the advantage, Sumitomo withdrew. From there, he once again plundered Tosa, Aki, and Suō Provinces and other areas, then proceeded directly to Dazaifu, where he seized government goods. The commander of the punitive force, Ono no Yoshifuru and his men, pursued Sumitomo and advanced toward Dazaifu.
In the fifth month of the fourth year (of Tengyō), Ono no Yoshifuru and his forces engaged in battle with Sumitomo at Hakata Bay in Chikuzen Province. Fujiwara no Yoshiyuki and Ōkura no Harusane, risking their lives, fought fiercely and set fire to the pirate vessels, burning them. In the sixth month, Sumitomo was defeated in battle; some of those who had followed him surrendered, while others fled and disappeared. Sumitomo himself boarded a small boat and fled back to Iyo Province. A man named Tachibana no Tooyasu, who was stationed there on guard duty, killed both Sumitomo and his son Jūtamaru and sent their severed heads to the capital. It is also said, however, that Sumitomo was captured alive and died in prison. In the eighth month, Ono no Yoshifuru returned to the capital. In the eleventh month, Tadahira resigned from the position of Regent (Sesshō). By imperial decree, he was appointed as Chancellor (Kanpaku), and it was declared that all matters of state governance should first be entrusted to Tadahira and then reported to the throne — following the precedent set by Lord Shōsen (Fujiwara no Mototsune).
