しかるべしと師輔が申されたとはいえ、実頼が同意しなかったため、その沙汰はなかった。それゆえ忠文は怒り、実頼を恨み、「（恩賞は）師輔に譲るべきである」と言って、断食して死んだ。その霊によって実頼の子孫は衰え、師輔の子孫は繁昌すると伝えられているが、将門が討たれてから数年を経て、忠文が七十余歳で死んだのであれば、世俗の言うところは疑わしい。
八月以降、天下に疱瘡が流行し、諸社へ奉幣、また読経・祈念が行われた。九月、菅丞相（菅原道真）の廟を北野に建てた。十一月、宇治へ行幸・遊猟。
二年（天暦二年・948年）、夏は大干ばつ、秋は大雨であった。八月二十四日、日と月が並んで見えた。

...that rewards ought to be bestowed, as Morosuke had submitted; however, since Saneyori did not concur, the matter was left without resolution. Consequently, Tadafumi became enraged, harboring resentment toward Saneyori, and declared that the rewards should be ceded to Morosuke; thereupon he starved himself to death. It is transmitted that, owing to his vengeful spirit, the descendants of Saneyori declined, while the descendants of Morosuke flourished — yet, given that several years had passed since Masakado's defeat when Tadafumi died at over seventy years of age, what the common people say in this regard seems doubtful.
From the eighth month onward, smallpox spread throughout the realm, and offerings (hōhei) were made to various shrines; sutras were also read and prayers offered. In the ninth month, a shrine (byō) dedicated to Chancellor Sugawara (Michizane) was erected at Kitano. In the eleventh month, an imperial excursion (gyōkō) was made to Uji for hunting.
In the second year (Tenryaku 2, 948), there was a great drought in summer and heavy rains in autumn. On the twenty-fourth day of the eighth month, the sun and moon were seen side by side.
In the third year (Tenryaku 3, 949), in the first month, Grand Minister of State (Daijō Daijin) Tadahira retired from office (chiji) on account of illness. Saneyori and Morosuke jointly administered the affairs of government. On the fourteenth day of the eighth month, Tadahira passed away. He was seventy years of age.
