五年正月、天皇は眼の病気があって、位を東宮敦成に譲った。太上天皇の尊号を奉った。在位五年。年号は長和。
第六十八代
後一条院 一条院の子である。諱は敦成。母は中宮藤原彰子（上東門院と号す）、左大臣道長の娘である。三条院即位の時、敦成は東宮となった。長和五年正月に、譲位を受けて即位。九歳であった。外祖父道長が摂政となった。その儀式は忠仁公の例の通りである。三条の皇子敦明を東宮とされた。
寛仁元年正月二十二日の夜、強盗が内裏に入った。滝口の内舎人藤原長輔と、道長の随身藤原良孝が出向いて、これを射殺した。二人に賞が与えられた。三月、道長は左大臣となった。

In the fifth year, first month, the Emperor suffered from an eye disease and abdicated the throne to Crown Prince Atsunari. He received the honorary title of Retired Emperor. His reign lasted five years. The era name was Chōwa.
Sixty-eighth Emperor
Emperor Go-Ichijō - Son of Emperor Ichijō. His personal name was Atsunari. His mother was Empress Fujiwara no Akiko (known as Jōtōmon-in), daughter of Minister of the Left Michinaga. When Emperor Sanjō ascended the throne, Atsunari became Crown Prince. In the fifth year of Chōwa, first month, he received the abdication and ascended the throne at age nine. His maternal grandfather Michinaga became regent. The ceremony followed the precedent of Lord Chūjin. Prince Atsuakira, son of Emperor Sanjō, was made Crown Prince.
In the first year of Kannin, on the night of the twenty-second day of the first month, bandits entered the Imperial Palace. Fujiwara no Chōsuke, a palace guard of Takiguchi, and Fujiwara no Yoshitaka, Michinaga's personal attendant, went out and shot them dead. Both men were rewarded. Third month, Michinaga became Minister of the Left.
