を辞して、右大臣顕光を左大臣に転じ、内大臣公季を右大臣とし、道長の嫡男大納言頼通を内大臣とした。道長はまた摂政を頼通に譲った。頼通は時に二十六歳であった。頼通の弟中納言教通は左大将となった。五月三日、道長は桟敷を一条の町に構えて、三千余人に施行した。同月九日、三条院太上天皇が崩御した。年四十二歳であった。六月二十七日、盗人が道長の蔵に入って、砂金千三百余両を盗んで逃走した。月を経て、播磨国で、その盗人を捕らえた。
八月、東宮敦明親王は、邪気によって、自ら位を退いて小一条院と号し、太上天皇に准じた。御弟敦良を東宮とした。これも道長父子の計らいであろう。冷泉・円融の両流が代わる代わる在位であったが、ここに至って冷泉の皇統は絶えた。

[Michinaga] resigned from [the position of Minister of the Left], promoted Right Minister Akimitsu to Minister of the Left, made Inner Minister Kinsue Right Minister, and appointed Michinaga's eldest son, Major Counselor Yorimichi, as Inner Minister. Michinaga also transferred the regency to Yorimichi. Yorimichi was twenty-six years old at the time. Yorimichi's younger brother, Middle Counselor Norimichi, became Left General. On the third day of the fifth month, Michinaga erected temporary structures on Ichijō street and distributed alms to over three thousand people. On the ninth day of the same month, Retired Emperor Sanjō passed away at the age of forty-two. On the twenty-seventh day of the sixth month, thieves broke into Michinaga's storehouse and stole over 1,300 ryō of gold dust before fleeing. After a month had passed, the thieves were captured in Harima Province.
In the eighth month, Crown Prince Atsuakira, due to evil influences, voluntarily abdicated his position and took the title Koichijō-in, receiving treatment equivalent to a Retired Emperor. His younger brother Atsuyoshi was made Crown Prince. This too was likely arranged by Michinaga and his son. The two lineages of Reizei and En'yū had alternated on the throne, but at this point the imperial line of Reizei was severed.
