兵威が強くなり、平直方も功績がないために召還された。甲斐守源頼信に命じて、坂東の軍勢を集めて忠常を討伐させた。
四年四月、頼信が兵を率いて忠常の城を攻めた。その城が海辺にあるため、忠常はあらかじめ下知して、船をことごとく取り隠していた。そのため頼信は渡る手段がなかった。しかし頼信は知勇を兼ね備えていたので、浅瀬であろう場所を推量して、馬を海へ打ち入れた。士卒の中に浅瀬の案内を知っている者がいたが、最初は黙って言わなかった。しかし大将の勇敢な姿を見て、その浅瀬を案内したので、軍勢は皆馬で海を渡った。忠常はこれを見てその威勢に恐れ、かなわないことを悟って降参した。頼信はただちに忠常を連れて上洛した。美濃国で忠常は病死した。

In the fourth year, fourth month, Yorinobu led his troops to attack Tadatsune's fortress. Since the castle was located by the seashore, Tadatsune had previously ordered that all boats be hidden away completely. Therefore, Yorinobu had no means to cross over. However, since Yorinobu possessed both wisdom and courage, he estimated where the shallow waters might be and drove his horse into the sea. Among his soldiers, there was someone who knew the location of the shallow crossing, but initially he remained silent and said nothing. However, seeing his general's brave determination, he guided them to the shallow waters, and all the troops crossed the sea on horseback. Seeing this, Tadatsune was awed by their威 (imposing presence), realized he could not prevail, and surrendered. Yorinobu immediately took Tadatsune with him and returned to the capital. Tadatsune died of illness in Mino Province.
