後朱雀院 一条天皇の子、諱は敦良。母は上東門院で、後一条院と同腹である。寛仁元年に東宮となる。長元九年七月、二十八歳で即位。外舅である左大臣頼通が変わらず関白となって政治を執る。
長暦元年正月、頼通の娘嫄子を女御とした。天皇が東宮にあった時、道長の娘嬉子が参って皇子親仁を生み、嬉子は亡くなった。その後に三条院の娘禎子内親王を御息所とし、皇子尊仁を生んだ。嫄子は天皇の兄敦康親王の娘であったが、頼通が養女として入内させた。三月に中宮に立てられた。

Sixty-ninth Emperor
Emperor Go-Suzaku: Son of Emperor Ichijō, personal name Atsunaga. His mother was Retired Empress Jōtōmon'in, making him a full brother of Emperor Go-Ichijō. In Kannin 1, he became Crown Prince. In Chōgen 9, seventh month, he ascended the throne at age twenty-eight. His maternal uncle, Minister of the Left Yorimichi, remained unchanged as regent and continued to conduct government.
In Chōreki 1, first month, Yorimichi's daughter Genshi became imperial consort. When the emperor was still crown prince, Michinaga's daughter Kishi had served him and bore Prince Chikahito, but Kishi died. Afterward, Princess Teishi, daughter of Emperor Sanjō, became his concubine and bore Prince Takahito. Genshi was the daughter of the emperor's elder brother Prince Atsuyasu, whom Yorimichi adopted and had enter the court. In the third month, she was elevated to empress.
