二年正月、上東門院へ朝覲の行幸があった。同年の冬、三井寺の明尊僧正を天台座主とした。
三年二月、叡山の衆徒等が頼通に状を捧げて、「明尊は智証の門流である。慈覚の派ではないので、座主に任じてはならない」と訴えた。頼通は「何の門流でもその人によるべきである」と言った。山徒は怒って、大勢で頼通の館に来て、嗷訴して、門柱を打ち破った。頼通は怒って、平直方をして、山徒を防がせた。互いに相戦い、死傷の者が多かった。山徒の張本である定勢を捕らえて禁獄した。五月、上東門院が落飾し、明尊が戒師となった。同八月二十二日、二十二社奉幣の勅使を定められた。二十二社とは、伊勢、石清水、下上の賀茂、松尾、平野、稲荷、春日、大原野、大神、石上、大和、広瀬、龍田、梅宮、吉田、広田、祇園、北野、丹生である。

In the second year, first month, there was an imperial visit to pay respects to Retired Empress Jōtōmon'in. In the winter of the same year, Abbot Myōson of Miidera was made Tendai chief abbot.
In the second month of the third year, the monk-soldiers of Mount Hiei presented a petition to Yorimichi, stating: "Myōson belongs to the Chishō lineage. Since he is not of the Jikaku school, he should not be appointed as chief abbot." Yorimichi replied, "Regardless of which lineage, it should depend on the person." The monk-soldiers became angry and came in great numbers to Yorimichi's mansion, making violent protests and breaking down the gate pillars. Yorimichi became angry and had Taira no Naomasa prevent the monk-soldiers from advancing. They fought each other, and there were many dead and wounded. They captured Jōsei, the ringleader of the monk-soldiers, and imprisoned him. In the fifth month, Retired Empress Jōtōmon'in took religious vows, with Myōson serving as her ordination master. On the twenty-second day of the eighth month, imperial messengers for offerings to the twenty-two shrines were appointed. The twenty-two shrines are: Ise, Iwashimizu, Upper and Lower Kamo, Matsunoo, Hirano, Inari, Kasuga, Ōharano, Ōmiwa, Isonokami, Yamato, Hirose, Tatsuta, Umenomiya, Yoshida, Hirota, Gion, Kitano, and Niū.
