叛したので、今度は日本武尊の兄である大碓皇子を派遣するべしという沙汰があったけれども、（大碓皇子が）ひどく恐れて逃げ隠れたので、再び日本武尊を大将として東国へ派遣した。尊はまず伊勢大神宮へ参拝し、倭姫に会って宝剣を賜って出発した。駿河国に到着した時、野に出て鹿狩りをしていると、蛮族どもが火を放って尊を焼き殺そうとした。尊の帯びていた宝剣が自ら抜けて、燃え来る草を薙ぎ払った。尊はまた火打ち石を打って火を放った。その火は敵の方へ向かって燃えて、敵はことごとく焼き殺された。宝剣を草薙剣というのはこの謂れである。それから相模国へ到着し、上総の海を渡る時、風が荒くて尊の船が危険であったので、尊の妾である橘媛が「これは竜神が尊に祟りをなすのでしょう。君の命に代わりましょう」といって、自ら海に沈んだ。やがて風が止んで御舟は岸に着いた。それから陸奥国に到着し、
