蝦夷を平定し、常陸に到着して筑波山を経由して甲斐国へ到着した。また武蔵・上野を巡回して、碓氷峠に登り、東南を望んで橘媛を慕って「ああ、我が妻よ」とおっしゃった。東国を「あづま」というのは、この謂れである。それから尊は副将の吉備武彦を北陸道へ派遣し、尊は信濃を越えて美濃へ出た。武彦も北陸道からこの場所へ合流した。それから尊は尾張へ出て、宮簀媛を娶って、しばらく滞在された。近江国の伊吹山に悪神がいると聞いて、尊は徒歩で山に登った。山神は大蛇となって道に横たわった。尊はその蛇を踏んで通り過ぎた。この時山中に雲霧が起こって非常に暗くなった。尊はようやく霧をしのいで山を出たが、その心は乱れて酒に酔ったようになった。山麓の泉を飲んで正気に戻った。その泉を醒井という。これより尊は毒気に当たり、お体が痛み、病気になったので、
