長の外孫である。
三年正月、関白師実は左大臣を辞して、源俊房が左大臣に転じ、その弟顕房が右大臣に昇り、師実の子師道を内大臣とした。二月、仁和寺の御室性信が二品に叙せられた。皇子が僧となって位を賜ることは、これより始まる。十月、法勝寺を建立し、九重の塔を作った。この寺の構造は先代の御願寺を超越するものであったため、この後代々の御願寺はますます広大になり、世の負担となった。
応徳元年九月、中宮賢子が崩御した。天皇は甚だしく歎かれて、政治をしばらく差し置かれた。
二年五月、沙門増誉を内裏へ召して、法華経を伝授された。天皇はこれよりいよいよ仏法を好まれ、故中宮賢子の追善のため

In the 1st month of the 3rd year, Kampaku Morozane resigned from his position as Sadaijin, Minamoto no Toshifusa was transferred to Sadaijin, his younger brother Akifusa was promoted to Udaijin, and Morozane's son Moromichi was made Naidaijin. In the 2nd month, Shōshin, the imperial prince-monk (Omuro) of Ninnaji, was given the court rank of Second Rank. The granting of court rank to imperial princes who became monks began from this time. In the 10th month, Hōshōji was built and a nine-story pagoda was constructed. Since the magnificence of this temple surpassed the imperial memorial temples of previous reigns, the imperial memorial temples of successive generations thereafter became increasingly grand and vast, becoming a burden on society.
In the 9th month of Ōtoku 1 (1084), Chūgū Kenshi died. The Emperor grieved deeply and temporarily set aside governmental affairs.
