Court ladies such as Suō no Naishi and Ise no Taifu were among the many palace women who composed poetry. He was also accomplished in instrumental music and refined songs, and was particularly skilled at playing the flute. He summoned a person called Tokimoto to play the shō (reed pipe) for his listening pleasure.
