次任という者がこれを討ち殺した。その同類である張本四十八人は皆討たれて、出羽・奥州はことごとく平定された。頼義の奥州合戦は、永承五年から康平五年まで十二年間であったが、世間では前九年の合戦と言っている。この合戦も、永保二年から数えれば寛治五年まで十年に及んだ。しかし世間では後三年の合戦と言い伝えられている。その対陣の内を除いて、合戦の間の年数のみを取って言うのであろうか。こうして義家は帰洛し、清衡をして奥州を守らせることによって、その子孫がついに奥州を押領することとなった。義家父子が相続いて武威を奥州に振るったので、関東の武士が皆源氏の被官となったのは、この時からのことであろう。
六年七月、上皇が吉野金峯山へ御幸された。

A man called Jinin killed him. His forty-eight accomplices who were the ringleaders were all killed, and Dewa and Ōshū provinces were completely pacified. Yoriyoshi's Ōshū campaign lasted twelve years from Eishō 5 to Kōhei 5, but the world calls it the Former Nine Years' War. This campaign also lasted ten years from Eihō 2 to Kanji 5. However, the world calls it the Later Three Years' War. Perhaps they exclude the period of confrontation and only count the years of actual fighting. Thus Yoshiie returned to the capital and had Kiyohira guard Ōshū, whereby his descendants eventually came to control Ōshū. Because Yoshiie and his son successively wielded military power in Ōshū, the fact that the warriors of Kantō all became retainers of the Minamoto clan probably dates from this time.
In the seventh month of the sixth year, the Retired Emperor made a pilgrimage to Mount Kinpusen in Yoshino.
In the first month of the seventh year, he made a pilgrimage to Kasuga and Ōharano.
