In the first year of Ten'nin, first month, Taira no Masamori fought against Minamoto no Yoshichika in Izumo Province, and Yoshichika was killed in battle. Initially, when Yoshichika was exiled, his son Tameyoshi was adopted and raised by his grandfather Yoshiie as his own child. Yoshichika's younger brother Yoshitada had been designated to succeed as head of Yoshiie's house, but Yoshitada became estranged from his uncle Shinra Saburō Yoshimitsu. In the second month of this year, Yoshimitsu secretly conspired with a man called Kashima Saburō to kill Yoshitada. No one knew that this was Yoshimitsu's doing; instead, there were rumors that it was the work of Yoshimitsu's elder brother Kamo Jirō Yoshitsuna. Yoshitsuna, angered at being blamed for a crime he did not commit, immediately rebelled and fortified himself in Mount Kōka in Ōmi Province.
