法皇の御養育によって入内し、后に立てられた。元永二年五月、天皇が誕生した。保安四年正月に譲位を受け、二月に即位した。時に五歳で、関白忠通が摂政となった。この時、天皇の曾祖父である白河法皇がなお存命で、院中にて政務を聴いていた。これを本院と申す。鳥羽を太上皇とも新院とも申す。同年九月、修理大夫藤原顕季が卒去した。享年六十九歳。和歌をもって名のある人であった。

She entered the palace under the care of the Retired Emperor and was made Empress. In the fifth month of Gen'ei 2 (1117), the Emperor was born.
