院中にて政務の沙汰をされた。前後世を治めることは五十年に及んだ。後世に院の御所の吉例には、白河院を申すのである。
白河崩御の後は、鳥羽上皇がまた政務を行われるので、禁中も摂家も、院中の下知に従わないということはない。白河存生の内は、待賢門院がもっぱら鳥羽上皇に寵愛されて、現在その他男女の御子が多数誕生している。白河が崩御したことにより、鳥羽は憚るところなく、前関白忠実の娘泰子を入内させて、高陽院と申す。また参議藤原長実の娘得子を召して女御とした。美福門院がこれである。同じ時に女院三人がいた。美福門院がもっぱら寵愛されて、上皇は政治に怠慢になった。
五年二月、関白忠通の娘聖子が入内して、皇后となった。皇嘉門院と号する。

Political affairs were administered from the retired emperor's palace. His rule over the realm lasted fifty years in total. In later generations, when speaking of auspicious precedents for retired emperors' palaces, they refer to Shirakawa-in.
After Shirakawa's death, Retired Emperor Toba again took charge of political affairs, so neither the imperial court nor the regent's family failed to follow the orders from the retired emperor's palace. During Shirakawa's lifetime, Empress Taikemon'in was exclusively favored by Retired Emperor Toba, and at present many male and female children have been born to them. With Shirakawa's death, Toba had no restraints, and he had Taishi, daughter of former Kampaku Tadazane, enter the palace as Kōyō-in. He also summoned Tokushi, daughter of Counselor Fujiwara no Nagasane, and made her imperial consort. This was Bifukumon-in. At the same time there were three empresses. Bifukumon-in was exclusively favored, and the retired emperor became negligent in government.
In the fifth year (1130), in the second month, Shōshi, daughter of Kampaku Tadamichi, entered the palace and became empress. She was titled Kōkamon-in.
