現代語訳
右大将であるため、どちらかといえば実行をと思し召して、雅定を抑えられたが、ある夜、上皇が急に内裏へ行幸されて、直接仰せられたため、雅定がついに左大将となった。奨学院・淳和院両院の別当は、源氏の長者が兼帯するところである。上皇の仰せによって永く雅定の家に付属されることとなった。
永治元年三月、上皇が鳥羽殿にて出家された。鳥羽法皇と号する。歳三十九。十二月、法皇の計らいによって、天皇が何の理由もなく位を滑り降りて、御弟の東宮体仁に譲った。これより法皇と不和となった。年号は天治二年、大治五年、天承一年、長承三年、保延六年、永治一年。在位合わせて十八年。

Since [Sanenō] was Right General, [the emperor] rather favored Saneyuki and tried to suppress Masasada's appointment. However, one night the retired emperor suddenly visited the imperial palace and spoke directly [to the emperor], so Masasada finally became Left General. The superintendency of both Shōgaku-in and Jun'wa-in academies was a position held by the head of the Minamoto clan. By the retired emperor's decree, it was permanently attached to Masasada's house.
In the third month of Eiji 1 (1141), the retired emperor took Buddhist vows at Toba Palace and was called Toba Retired Emperor (Hōō). He was thirty-nine years old. In the twelfth month, through the retired emperor's machinations, the emperor abdicated without any particular reason and yielded the throne to his younger brother, Crown Prince Narihito. From this time, [the emperor] became estranged from the retired emperor. The era names were: Tenji 2 years, Daiji 5 years, Tenshō 1 year, Chōshō 3 years, Hōen 6 years, and Eiji 1 year. Total reign: eighteen years.
