二条院 後白河第一の子。諱は守仁。母は藤原懿子。大炊御門贈太政大臣経実の娘である。後白河即位の時、東宮に立った。保元三年八月、譲位を受けて即位した。忠通が関白を辞し、その子右大臣基実を関白とした。時に十六歳であった。天下の政務は、皆後白河上皇が沙汰された。信西はますます近習して、権威を振るった。

The Seventy-eighth Emperor
Emperor Nijō: The first son of Go-Shirakawa. His personal name was Morihito. His mother was Fujiwara no Yoshiko, daughter of the posthumously appointed Chancellor Tsunezane of the Ōinomikado family. When Go-Shirakawa ascended the throne, Morihito was appointed Crown Prince. In the eighth month of the third year of Hōgen, he received the abdication and ascended the throne. Tadamichi resigned as regent, and his son, Right Minister Motomi, became regent at the age of sixteen. All governmental affairs of the realm were administered by Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa. Shinzei increasingly gained imperial favor and wielded authority.
In the first year of Heiji, on the third day of the first month, there was an imperial visit to pay respects to the Retired Emperor. On the twenty-first day of the same month, an inner banquet was held. After this, it was again discontinued and not performed.
