六条院 二条院の子。諱は順仁。母は大蔵大輔紀兼盛の娘である。
永万元年六月に即位した。時に二歳。関白基実が摂政を務めた。御祖父である後白河上皇が院中にて政務を沙汰された。同年八月、平清盛が大納言に任じられた。
仁安元年七月、平重盛が中納言に任じられた。同月、摂政基実が薨去した。享年二十四歳。太政大臣を贈られた。その弟である左大臣基房が代わって摂政となった。十月、上皇の計らいで、憲仁親王を東宮に立てられた。憲仁は上皇の子で、主上の叔父である。主上は三歳であった。

Emperor Rokujō: Son of Emperor Nijō. His personal name was Norihito. His mother was the daughter of Ōkura-no-taifu Ki no Kanemori.
He ascended the throne in the sixth month of the first year of Eiman at the age of two. Chancellor Motozane served as regent. His grandfather, Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa, conducted government affairs from the imperial court. In the eighth month of the same year, Taira no Kiyomori was appointed Major Counselor.
In the seventh month of the first year of Jin'an, Taira no Shigemori was appointed Middle Counselor. In the same month, Regent Motozane died at the age of twenty-four. He was posthumously granted the title of Chancellor. His younger brother, Minister of the Left Motofusa, became regent in his place. In the tenth month, through the arrangement of the Retired Emperor, Prince Norihito was appointed Crown Prince. Norihito was the son of the Retired Emperor and uncle to the current Emperor. The current Emperor was three years old.
