Eighty-first Sovereign
Emperor Antoku Son of Takakura-in. His personal name was Kotohito. His mother was Kenreimon-in Taira no Tokuko, daughter of Grand Minister of State and Lay Monk Kiyomori. Born in the eleventh month of Jishō 2 (1178). In the second month of Jishō 4 (1180), he received the abdication from Takakura-in and ascended the throne at age three. Kiyomori and his wife received imperial edicts granting them the status of Jun-Sangū (quasi-imperial family). Chancellor Motomichi became regent. Cloistered Emperor Go-Shirakawa was confined to Toba Palace, and Retired Emperor Takakura, though called Shin-in (New Retired Emperor), did not concern himself with governmental affairs. The regent was regent in name only, and all matters of the realm, great and small, were entirely at Kiyomori's discretion. In the third month, Shin-in made a pilgrimage to Itsukushima in Aki Province. Since this was a deity revered by the Taira family, Kiyomori was pleased, thinking that if the emperor's heart might be softened, there might be occasion to release the Cloistered Emperor from Toba.
