阿波の民部重能が平家を迎え入れ、讃岐国屋島に内裏を造営した。これによって平家はしばらく安らかに住み、南海道と山陽道を支配下に置いた。
十月、義仲は源義清を将として兵を遣わして平家を討伐させた。備中の水島で、知盛および能登守教経らと戦ったが、源氏が敗北し、義清は戦死した。教経は教盛の次男である。義清は足利の一族で、仁木・細川の先祖である。

Awa no Minbu Shigeyoshi welcomed the Taira clan and constructed an imperial palace at Yashima in Sanuki Province. Through this, the Taira lived peacefully for a while and controlled the Nankai and San'yō circuits.
In the tenth month, Yoshinaka dispatched troops under the command of Minamoto no Yoshikiyo to attack the Taira. At Mizushima in Bitchū, they fought against Tomomori and Noto-no-kami Noritsune and others, but the Minamoto were defeated and Yoshikiyo died in battle. Noritsune was the second son of Norimorii. Yoshikiyo was from the Ashikaga clan and was an ancestor of the Niiki and Hosokawa families.
Afterward, Yoshinaka personally advanced and killed Seno no Kaneyasu, a retainer of the Taira. Yoshinaka should have continued to attack the Taira, but hearing that Yukiie was asserting his authority in the capital and slandering him, he hurried back to Kyoto. Yukiie did not remain in the capital but proceeded to Harima Province, where he fought the Taira at Muroyama. However, Yukiie was defeated and fled to Kawachi.
In the eleventh month, Yoshinaka was in the capital, and his evil deeds surpassed even those of the Taira. The Cloistered Emperor was enraged and [appealed to] the warrior-monks of Mount Hiei and Mii-dera.
