に命じて義仲を討とうと謀っているという風聞があったので、今井四郎兼平は「どうにかして法皇に罪を謝るべきです」と言ったが、義仲は聞き入れなかった。兵を率いて法住寺の御所を攻撃し、火を放って、法皇を五条の御所に押し込めた。天台座主明雲、三井寺の長吏円慶法親王以下、殺された者の数は数百人に及んだ。百官は皆裸足で逃げ惑い、屈辱を受ける者が多かった。義仲は自ら丹波国を領有し、前関白松殿基房の婿となって、摂政基通、内大臣実定ら四十九人の官位を削った。基房の子である中納言師家は、わずか十二歳であったが、内大臣とし、摂政とした。

[The cloistered emperor] ordered [the warrior-monks] to plot against Yoshinaka. When rumors of this reached them, Imai Shirō Kanehira said, "By all means, we should apologize to the cloistered emperor for our crimes," but Yoshinaka would not listen. He led his troops to attack the Hōjūji Palace, set it on fire, and confined the cloistered emperor to the Gojō Palace. The Tendai chief abbot Meiin, Mii-dera head administrator Prince Enkyō, and many others were killed—the number of those slain reached several hundred. All the court officials fled barefoot in confusion, and many suffered humiliation. Yoshinaka personally took control of Tanba Province and became the son-in-law of former Chancellor Matsudono Motofusa. He stripped forty-nine people, including Regent Motonichi and Minister of the Left Sanesada, of their court ranks. He made Motofusa's son, Middle Counselor Moroie, who was only twelve years old, into Minister of the Left and regent.
In the twelfth month, Yoritomo killed Kazusa-no-suke Hirotsune. Later, realizing that [Hirotsune] was innocent, he is said to have regretted this.
