In the eighth month, Yoshitsune was appointed to Saemon no Jō (Assistant Captain of the Left Palace Guards). In the ninth month, he was given the court rank of Jūgoi (Junior Fifth Rank) and titled Taifu no Hōgan (Inspector of the Palace). Yoshitsune protected the capital while Noriyori headed to the western seas to attack the Taira. At Fujito in Bizen, he fought against Taira no Yukimori. Sasaki Moritsuna led the vanguard, and the Taira were defeated. In the tenth month, Yoritomo established the Monchūjo (Board of Inquiry) and had Ōe no Hiromoto, Miyoshi Yoshinobu, and others hear legal cases.
