In the ninth month, Yasuhira attempted to flee to Ezogashima (Hokkaido). His retainer Kawada Jirō killed him and surrendered. Yasuhira's brothers Toshihira, Suehira, and Takahira also all surrendered. Mutsu and Dewa were completely pacified. At this time, Yoritomo's army, including high and low ranks combined, numbered 284,000 men. From Kiyohira through Motohira and Hidehira to Yasuhira—four generations spanning a hundred years—they had accumulated great wealth and treasures. Yoritomo distributed all of these among his retainers. He divided the districts and villages of both provinces to reward military achievements, and had Kasai Kiyoshige remain stationed in Ōshū.
