土御門院（つちみかどのいん）は後鳥羽院の太子である。諱は為仁（ためひと）。母は源在子で、承明門院と号した。法印能円の娘であったが、内大臣源通親が養女として、後鳥羽院に参上させた。建久六年十二月に為仁を誕生した。同九年正月に譲位を受け、三月に即位した。その時四歳であった。近衛関白藤原基通が摂政となった。後鳥羽院に太政天皇の尊号を奉った。院中にて政務を執り行われた。しかしながら、何事もみな源頼朝が関東より計らい申し上げた。
十月、京都の守護である中納言藤原能保が卒去した。歳五十二であった。
十一月、花山院右大臣藤原兼雅が左大臣に転じ、大炊御門大納言藤原頼実が右大臣となった。十二月、相模国

The 83rd Emperor
Tsuchimikado-in was the crown prince of Go-Toba-in. His personal name was Tamehito. His mother was Minamoto no Ariko, who was titled Shōmyō-mon-in. She was the daughter of the Hōin (Buddhist priest) Nōen, but was adopted by the Naidaijin (Minister of the Center) Minamoto no Michichika and presented to Go-Toba-in. In the 12th month of Kenkyū 6, Tamehito was born. In the 1st month of Kenkyū 9, he received the abdication and ascended to the throne in the 3rd month. At that time he was four years old. The Konoe Kanpaku Fujiwara no Motomichi became regent. The title of Daijō Tennō was bestowed upon Go-Toba-in. Government affairs were conducted from the retired emperor's court. However, in all matters, everything was arranged by Minamoto no Yoritomo from Kantō.
