開闔（責任者）とした。藤原清範、鴨長明、藤原秀能を寄人（補佐役）とした。上皇は和歌を好み、最もその道に通じておられた。初め延喜の御時、紀貫之等に命じて古今集を撰ばせて以来、村上天皇の時、大中臣能宣、源順、清原元輔、紀時文、坂上望城の五人に命じて後撰集を撰ばせ、一条院の時、藤原公任が拾遺集を撰し、白河院の時、藤原通俊が後拾遺を撰し、崇徳院の時、源俊頼が金葉集を撰し、近衛院の時、藤原顕輔が詞花集を撰し、後白河院の時、藤原俊成が千載集を撰した。今また上皇は、源通具、藤原有家、藤原定家、藤原家隆、藤原雅経に命じて新古今集を撰ばせた。古今集からここまでを八代集と号する。
二年正月、従五位大炊助新田義重が卒去した。六月、建仁

its director. He appointed Fujiwara no Kiyonori, Kamo no Chōmei, and Fujiwara no Hidenō as associate members (yoribito). The Retired Emperor was fond of waka poetry and was most accomplished in that art. Originally, during Emperor Daigo's Engi era, he commanded Ki no Tsurayuki and others to compile the Kokin-shū. Later, during Emperor Murakami's reign, five people - Ōnakatomi no Yoshinobu, Minamoto no Shitagau, Kiyohara no Motosuke, Ki no Tokifumi, and Sakanoue no Mochiki - were commanded to compile the Gosen-shū. During Emperor Ichijō's time, Fujiwara no Kintō compiled the Shūi-shū. During Emperor Shirakawa's time, Fujiwara no Michitoshi compiled the Goshūi-shū. During Emperor Sutoku's time, Minamoto no Toshiyori compiled the Kin'yō-shū. During Emperor Konoe's time, Fujiwara no Akisuke compiled the Shika-shū. During Emperor Go-Shirakawa's time, Fujiwara no Shunzei compiled the Senzai-shū. Now again, the Retired Emperor commanded Minamoto no Michitomo, Fujiwara no Arie, Fujiwara no Teika, Fujiwara no Ietaka, and Fujiwara no Masatsune to compile the Shin Kokin-shū. From the Kokin-shū to this point, they are called the Eight Imperial Anthologies (Hachidai-shū).
