鶴岡八幡宮へ参拝した。その出立の時に際して、広元入道覚阿が参上して、束帯の下に腹巻を着用すべきであると申し上げた。実朝は許可しなかった。その行列の次第は厳重であった。前駆・随身・公卿・殿上人が扈従し、随兵十騎があった。義時が御剣の役であったが、俄かに体調不良となり、剣を文章博士仲章に譲って帰った。実朝が神拝を終えて退出する時、石段の辺りで、当宮の別当公暁が、偽って女の姿の真似をして、うかがい待ち、刀を抜いて実朝の首を切り、父の仇を討つと叫んだ。一刀で仲章を打ち切った。これは兼ねて義時が剣の役であることを聞き及んで、その俄かに帰ることを知らず、夜中故にその顔を見分けず、義時を斬ると思って、誤って仲章を斬り殺したのである。供奉の武士等は大いに騒いだが、俄かのことなので、呆然としていた。公暁は雪ノ下の坊に隠れ
