Retired Emperor Go-Horikawa: His personal name was Mochihito. He was the grandson of Emperor Takakura and the son of Prince Morisada. Although Morisada was the elder brother of Go-Toba, because he did not find favor with Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa, he did not ascend to the throne and spent his years as Prince Jimyōin. After the Jōkyū Disturbance, through Yoshitoki's arrangement, Mochihito was enthroned in the seventh month of Jōkyū 3. His mother was Fujiwara no Chinshi, daughter of Chūnagon Ieka. This emperor was only ten years old at the time of his enthronement. Therefore, his father Morisada was given the honorary title of Retired Emperor and was made to oversee government affairs.
