四条院 諱は秀仁。後堀河院の太子である。母は藻壁門院藤原竴子、摂政左大臣道家の娘である。寛喜三年二月に誕生。貞永元年十月に譲りを受けて即位。その時二歳。道家の嫡子関白教実が摂政となる。後堀河院が院政を院中にて行おうとするけれども、道家が外祖父であることによって威勢を振るった。摂政教実も、鎌倉の将軍頼経も、皆道家の子である。その上、教実の弟良実・実経も相次いで昇進する。近衛右大臣兼経は道家の婿である。仁和寺御室

The Eighty-Sixth Emperor
Emperor Shijō: His personal name was Hidehito. He was the crown prince of Emperor Go-Horikawa. His mother was Sōheki Mon-in Fujiwara no Takeko, daughter of Regent and Minister of the Left Michiie. He was born in the second month of Kanki 3 (1231). In the tenth month of Jōei 1 (1232), he received the abdication and ascended the throne at the age of two. Michiie's eldest son, Chancellor Norisane, became regent. Though Emperor Go-Horikawa attempted to conduct cloistered government from his palace, Michiie wielded great influence as the maternal grandfather. Both Regent Norisane and Kamakura Shogun Yoritsune were sons of Michiie. Moreover, Norisane's younger brothers Yoshizane and Sanetsune also advanced in succession.
