He entered the capital and went to the palace of Shōmyōmon-in to convey Yasutoki's message.
Both Shumyōmon-in, the mother of Emperor Juntoku, and Dōke were greatly surprised. However, since this was Yasutoki's order and Yoshikage was conveying it, there was no room for objection. On the 20th of the same month, Kunihito came of age at twenty-three. Left Minister Fujiwara no Yoshizane performed the capping ceremony, and Left Middle Controller Sadatsugu performed the hair-cutting ceremony. In the second month, there was the政始 (first governmental ceremony). In the third month, the enthronement took place. Yoshizane became regent (kanpaku). He was Dōke's second son, and the Nijō house began from this point. In the sixth month, Kitsuako, daughter of Saionji Right Minister Sanesuke, entered the palace and became a consort (nyōgo) at age eighteen.
On the 15th of the same month, Hōjō Musashi-no-kami Yasutoki died at age sixty. From Gennin 1 until this year, he had served as regent (shikken) for nineteen years. Because he conducted government without personal interest and made decisions according to the righteous path, both court nobles and warriors relied on him, and the realm was at peace.
His legitimate grandson, Sakon-no-shōgen Tsunetoki, succeeded him and became regent to Shōgun Yoritsune. In the eighth month, Consort Kitsuako became Empress (chūgū). In the ninth month, Emperor Juntoku in Sa-
