He passed away in Sado at the age of forty-six. In the tenth month, the posthumous rank of Empress (kōgō) was bestowed upon his mother Tsūshi, and the posthumous rank of Left Minister with Senior First Rank was bestowed upon his maternal grandfather Tsūmune. In the twelfth month, Former Regent Konoe no Iezane died at the age of sixty-four.
In the sixth month of Kangen 1 (1243), a prince was born to the Empress. The ceremonial rites during the seven nights were extremely elaborate. He was immediately established as Crown Prince. Saionji Sanesuke, having gained influence as the maternal grandfather, governed court affairs together with the father and son Dōke and Yoshizane. Among the court officials who achieved prominence, most were favored by these two men. Sanesuke's father, the lay priest Kintsune, was still alive and living at his mountain villa in Kitayama, where he had built artificial hills, collected various trees and stones, dug ponds, and erected pavilions for his enjoyment. He also built the Saionji Hall and constructed temple buildings alongside it. This rivaled even Minister Dōchō's Hōjōji Hall, and its magnificence was even greater. Prince Ninjo Hōshinō of Enman-in, who was the Emperor's elder brother by the same mother, was naturally intelligent and maintained close relations with the Emperor.
