建長三年（1251年）七月、頼嗣は従三位に叙せられ、左中将に任じられた。時頼は正五位下に叙せられた。これは閑院内裏の造営に対する賞である。十二月、佐々木氏信・武藤景頼らが了行法師という者を生け捕りにして、時頼に献じた。詮議したところ、前将軍頼経が京都において世を乱そうとする企てがあることが明らかになった。これにより、その同類で関東にいる者たちはすべて罪に処せられた。
建長四年（1252年）二月、時頼と重時が使者を京都へ遣わし、後嵯峨上皇の第一皇子・宗尊親王を迎えて鎌倉の主君とすることを申し入れた。同月、光明峯寺前摂政・道家が薨去した。享年六十一歳。この人物は頼経の父であることから、義時・泰時の時代には武家からも重んじられていたため、その威勢はほとんど帝王のようであった。しかし頼経が上洛した後は、北条氏を怨む志があり、三浦の光村とも申し合わせることがあった。

In the third year of Kenchō [1251], in the seventh month, Yoritsugu was granted the Junior Third Rank (Jushō-i) and appointed as the Middle Captain of the Left (Sachūjō). Tokiyori was granted the Senior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade (Shōgoi-no-ge). These were rewards for the construction of the Kan'in Imperial Palace. In the twelfth month, Sasaki Ujinori, Mutō Kagetora, and others captured alive a man called the monk Ryōgyō and presented him to Tokiyori. Upon interrogation, it was revealed that the former Shogun Yoritsugu had a plot to throw the realm into disorder while in Kyoto. As a result, all of his associates who were in the Kantō were punished.
In the fourth year of Kenchō [1252], in the second month, Tokiyori and Shigetoki dispatched a messenger to Kyoto, and requested that the first prince of the Retired Emperor Go-Saga, Prince Munetaka, be received and made the lord of Kamakura. In the same month, the former Regent of Kōmyōbuji, Michiie, passed away at the age of sixty-one. Because this man was the father of Yoritsugu, he had been highly regarded even by the warrior houses during the time of Yoshitoki and Yasutoki, and his authority was very nearly that of an emperor. However, after Yoritsugu went up to the capital [Kyoto, i.e., after being sent back], he harbored a grudge against the Hōjō clan and had reportedly been in communication with Miura no Mitsumura as well.
