(Yoshimune) was a son of Nagatoki.
In the first month of the ninth year (of Bun'ei, 1272), Korehisa was elevated to the Junior Second Rank. His position as Middle Captain remained as before. On the fifteenth day of the second month, an express messenger arrived from Kamakura at the residence of Hōjō Yoshimune, the head of the Northern Rokuhara. Yoshimune immediately rushed to the Southern Rokuhara and struck down Tokisuke. Since Tokisuke was the elder brother of Tokimune, and had long harbored a grudge at having the headship of the clan taken by his younger brother, it was said that he had been plotting rebellion, and this was suddenly brought to light, resulting in his death. In Kamakura as well, his associates Hōjō Kimitoki and Hōjō Noritoki were killed. This event is referred to as the "Disturbance of the Second Month" (Nigatsu Sōdō).
On the seventeenth day of the same month, the Retired Emperor Go-Saga passed away at the age of fifty-three. He had heard matters of governance from within the retired emperor's court for more than twenty years after his abdication. As the times were peaceful, he passed away in such comfort and ease. It is transmitted that he left a testament declaring that the imperial line after this should alternate between the two branches of his sons — the New Retired Emperor (Go-Fukakusa) and the reigning Emperor (Kameyama) — in successive reigns. However, in truth, it was Hōjō Tokimune who, in order to divide and suppress the power of the imperial court by splitting it into two lineages, arranged for the two lines to alternate in rule...
