In this same year, Hōjō Tokimune founded Engakuji temple, appointing the Zen monk Sogen (Zuyuan) as its founding abbot. Sogen had come to Japan from China at Tokimune's invitation around this time. He was the Zen master known as Bukkō Zenji.
In the second month of the sixth year [of Kōan, 1283], Tokimune had Hōjō Naritoki serve as co-signatory (kajō) of the regent. Naritoki was the fifth son of Shigetoki.
In the first month of the seventh year [of Kōan, 1284], the Kuga Middle Counselor Minamoto no Motomasa was raised to Junior First Rank and resigned from his official post. In the second month, he was permitted to attend court on a par with a Minister of State, was given the title "Gitō Sanshi," and was ranked below the Ministers but above the Great Counselors. On the fourth day of the fourth month, Hōjō Sagami no Kami Tokimune, due to illness, shaved his head and took the religious name "Dōka." He passed away on the same day, at the age of thirty-four.
