権力を争った。泰盛の子・宗景は傲慢さのあまり、曾祖父の景盛が頼朝と縁があるといって、藤原氏の姓を改めて源氏となった。頼綱はこれを訴えて、「彼が源氏となるのは、将軍になろうとする志があるために違いない」と申し上げた。貞時もなるほどと思ったのか、実際に謀反の心があったのかどうか、同年十一月、泰盛・宗景以下の一族、ならびにその同類がことごとく誅殺された。これを霜月騒動という。これより頼綱は一人で威を振るった。頼綱は髪を剃って果円と号した。
