In the same month, the Regent (Kanpaku) Iemoto resigned as Minister of the Right (Udaijin). Nijō Kanetada, the Minister of the Center (Naidaijin) of the Kujō clan, was appointed Minister of the Right. Saionji Sanekane, the Major Counselor (Dainagon), was appointed Minister of the Center. Although Sanekane's daughter had been elevated to the position of Empress Consort (Chūgū), she had no children. The imperial prince Tanehito had been born of the daughter of the Consultative Counselor (Sangi) Fujiwara no Tsuneuji, but was adopted by the Empress Consort, and was thereupon installed as Crown Prince. Sanekane wielded the power of a maternal relative of the Emperor (gaiseki). This was no doubt because of his close relationship with the Hōjō clan.
In the third year, on the fourth day of the third month, the lion and Korean dog (shishi and komainu) statues in the Shishinden ceremonially cracked from within. Everyone found this strange and ominous. On the night of the ninth day, a man by the name of Asahara no Hachirō Tameyori, a descendant of the Kai-Genji (the Minamoto clan of Kai Province), took his two sons with him, donned armor, and while still mounted on horseback, charged into the Imperial Palace (Dairi). He demanded of the court ladies that they tell him where His Majesty was seated. While the ladies were in a state of confusion, rushing this way and that, His Majesty disguised himself in the garb of a court lady and quietly slipped away; the Empress Consort and the Crown Prince also secretly fled to another place. Tameyori and his sons...
