中宮の御方へ尋ね行って御座所を探した。宿直の侍たちと戦っているうちに、近辺の篝火番の武士五十騎が駆けつけてきた。為頼は叶わないと思って、夜の御寝所の御茵（しとね）の上で自害した。その長男は、紫宸殿の御帳台の中で自害した。次男は、大障子の下に伏して、しばらく矢を放って防ぎ戦ったが、武士たちが生け捕りにしようとしたので、叶わずに自害した。その屍は六波羅へ送られて実検（検分）された。為頼が放った矢の標（矢印）には、「太政大臣・源為頼」と書かせようとしたということである。そもそも為頼は、強弓・太刀をもって悪逆の張本人であったために、鎌倉からその所領を没収され、国元へ触れ出されて捕らえられようとした。身の置き所がなかったために、このような浅ましい事を仕出かしたのであろうか。しかしながら、為頼が自害した刀は、三条の宰相中将・実盛の家に代々相伝された刀であると言われたことにより、六波羅から実盛を

They made their way to the Empress Consort's quarters, searching for her location. While fighting with the night-watch attendants, fifty mounted warriors on nearby guard duty came galloping to the scene. Realizing he could not prevail, Tameyori took his own life upon the sleeping cushion (shitone) of the night chamber. His eldest son committed suicide within the curtained dais (michō) of the Shishinden. The second son lay behind a large screen door and for a time shot arrows in defense, but when the warriors attempted to take him alive, he too, unable to resist, took his own life. Their corpses were sent to Rokuhara for inspection and verification. It is said that on the arrows that Tameyori had shot, he had intended to have written "Dajō-daijin Minamoto no Tameyori" (Grand Minister of State, Minamoto no Tameyori). In the first place, Tameyori, with his powerful bow and sword, had been the ringleader of violent and treasonous acts, and for this reason Kamakura had confiscated his landholdings and issued a notice throughout the province ordering his arrest. Having no place to take refuge, he may well have committed this outrageous act out of desperation.
