In the seventh month of Einin 6 (1298), he ascended to the throne at the age of eleven. Takatsukasa Kanpaku (Imperial Regent) Kanetada served as regent (sesshō). At this time, the retired emperors Go-Fukakusa, Kameyama, Go-Uda, and Fushimi were all still living, and there were four imperial retired residences (in no gosho). In the eighth month, Kuniteru (Kuniharu), son of the Retired Emperor Go-Uda, was installed as Crown Prince (Tōgū). He was the Emperor's second cousin. In the twelfth month, Kanetada retired from the regency, and Nijō Sadaijin (Minister of the Left) Kanemoto became regent.
